Flowers are always a welcome gift and as such you want to make sure they last as long as possible. Fortunately it is not that difficult to keep flowers looking their best as there are some very simple techniques that you can try. Five of the best techniques are described in more detail below.
Cut The Stems
You should cut the stems of the flowers as soon as you recieve the bouquet. One or two inches should be enough and it should be cut at an angle to make it easier for them to take in water. This should be repeated every couple of days while the flowers are still alive. This is a crucial step in keeping your bouquet alive but it is something that not a lot of people are aware of.
Prune On A Regular Basis
If the leaves start to droop below the water line, then they should be pruned. This makes it less likely that bacterial rot will occur. You should also keep an eye on the petals and remove ones that look as if they may be dying. This will prevent any bacteria from passing to the other petals and so will keep the flowers looking their best.
Take Care When Watering
It is important to make sure that your flowers always have enough water. The water in the vase will be used by the plants and some of it will also evaporate. Therefore it needs to be checked every couple of days. You may also want to add flower food to the water but you need to make sure that you have the concentration right as it will not be as effective if it is too diluted. The vase that you use for your flowers should be clean and the water should be changed every few days, with more food added when the water is changed.
Avoid Direct Sunlight
Many people like to keep their flowers in the window but being exposed to direct sunlight can shorten their life. Instead, the best place to keep them is an area of the room that usually stays cool but does not experience any drafts. They should also be kept away from any appliance that generates heat. This can cause the plants to dehydrate and this will almost certainly shorten their life.
Think Outside The Box
If you perform a quick internet search you will find a whole host of tried and tested solutions for keeping flowers alive that you may not have heard of before. These include things such as adding a mixture of sugar and apple cider vinegar to the water that the bouquet is kept in. Aspirin and vodka are other things that can be added to the water in order to slow down the wilting of your flowers. It may take a little bit of trial and error to find a solution that works best for you. With any of these solutions the water will still need changing every few days with the same ingredients added to the fresh water.
